Horror Movie Classification
HDemonic / Religious Horror
The strongest cinematic connection is to The Exorcist (1973) and the long tradition of demonic-possession horror it helped define.
The religious setting, demonic presence, and battle against an explicitly supernatural evil all draw from the imagery that has become synonymous with possession films: sacred spaces, corrupted faith, exorcism, and an enemy that attacks its victims spiritually as well as physically.
There are also strong visual and thematic similarities to The Nun (2018) and the larger Conjuring universe, where traditional religious imagery becomes part of the horror itself.
Rather than reproducing one particular film, A Demon in the Shadows feels like Van Ryder's tribute to the broader demonic-possession and religious-horror genre.
