Author: Gary Gygax
TSR product: 2010
Edition: AD&D First Edition
Printing: Third printing, January 1979
Cover: Original David A. Trampier “demon idol” cover
ISBN: None

The copyright page explicitly identifies this as the January 1979 third printing. The original cover layout, green spine, orange endpapers, and lack of an ISBN all match that printing. It is an early copy, but not a first printing.

Positives

  • Boards and text block appear attached

  • Spine remains readable

  • Interior text appears complete and legible

  • No missing pages are visible in the photographed sections

  • Original orange endpapers remain present

  • Earlier and more collectible third printing

Detractions

  • Heavy rubbing, scuffing, fading, and surface wear across both covers

  • Rounded and worn corners

  • Extensive old moisture staining along the bottom margins throughout much of the book

  • Additional discoloration and spotting on the endpapers

  • A faint former-owner inscription is visible at the upper-left front endpaper, possibly “M. Bailey,” though the handwriting is not entirely clear

  • Some minor interior marking, including blue or purple coloring beneath the wererat illustration

  • General age toning and handling wear

The staining does not appear to obscure the rules in the photographed pages, but its extent prevents a “Good” grade. This is a readable veteran copy rather than a collector-display copy.
